Ransomware | Lessons Learned

comments by Daniel Weatherly –

New Bedford, Massachusetts was hit with ransomware back in July and the demand was $5.3 million. The city offered $400,000 which is what their insurance would pay, but the attackers would not deal.

The city ended up restoring from backups.

My take away’s from this article:

  1. You need good and current backups. In an attack, you do not want to simply restore backups as you may end up with the same holes that got you hacked in the first place. You should rebuild and use backups for restoring applications and data.
  2. Segmentation of your network can limit access and prevent hackers from getting to all of your systems
  3. Early detection can prevent further damage.
